Dominant energy balances out

By Kavita Maharaj - Nanaimo News Bulletin - January 05, 2009

Last column we talked about the balance of male and female energy that exists within each and every one of us.

I described the play of male energy (shiva) as one of expending or giving out, while the play of female energy (shakti) is one of consuming or taking in.

Although we seek to balance male and female energy, there are times when imbalances are actually desirable in life.

For example, your male energy should be more dominant at the start of your day. If it is not, it will manifest as difficulty with your “get up and go.”

Your female energy on the other hand should be more dominant at the end of your day.

If it is not, you will have difficulty sleeping.

But even in imbalance, balance should be sought.

For despite the dominance of male energy at the beginning of the day and the dominance of female energy at the end, when your day is looked at as a whole, your male and female energy should actually be well-balanced.

There are other times when full balance should be sought. During conversations, for example, true sharing and comfort for all involved can only happen when male and female energy is in balance.

Think about it.

In a conversation, do you talk more than you listen?

Do you listen more than you talk?

Balanced male and female energy manifests as the ability to take in and give out equally when you converse with others.

The next time you hold a conversation with someone, notice if there is an imbalance in either direction, within yourself or within the other.

If during your conversation, your male energy is dominant, the result will be too much talking and not enough listening.

If during your conversation however, your female energy is dominant, there will be too much listening and not enough talking.

Either way, the result limits the true sharing within the conversation and may result in discomfort for both of you.

So the question now is how do you change your energy?

As mentioned last column, the right side of the body is the male and the left side is the female. Throughout the day, the body has a natural circadian rhythm that moves breath and thus energy from one side to the other.

As a result, during a 24-hour period, your breathing moves mainly through the right nostril for 12 hours and mainly through the left nostril for 12 hours.

When the breath, and thus the energy, is flowing mainly through the right, the male energy is dominant and the body is energized, ready to expend, ready to give out.

When the breath, and thus the energy, is flowing mainly through the left however, the female energy is dominant and the body is relaxed, ready to consume, ready to take in.

Therefore, if you wish to change your current dominating energy, you will need to change the nostril through which the breath, and thus the energy, is currently flowing.

If, for example, your breath is currently flowing through your right nostril and you wish to awaken more female energy, simply close off the right nostril and breathe for a couple of minutes through your left only.

This will initiate a change in the flow of breath and energy.
